The Aussie spirit is a ghost

We are often saying how proud we are of our fellow Australians and how often against adversity we rise above it and help out. We have shown in recent times with the bushfires that we will provide millions of dollars of our hard earned cash to help people rebuild and we do a great job at raising money for RCH appeal. However quite often this showing of generosity doesn’t directly impact our lives, so donating whilst sitting behind a phone or keyboard isn’t going to stop me from living my life.
We are arguably facing our greatest challenge and need to lean on the great Australian spirit more than ever but as we look to a helping hand all we see is empty shelves.
Stockpiling 6 weeks worth of toilet paper in a day, emptying the shelves of basic food items such pasta and bread and hoarding hand sanitiser is how we the great Australians are supporting each other.
How Australian is it to see an elderly person or a someone with a disability starve or a single mum with 2 kids not be able to buy nappies? How Australian is it to to force our elderly to line up at 7am in the morning to get a chance of getting some basics?
The most vulnerable Australians to this virus are anxious and scared. They are sitting in a darkness of uncertainty hoping that everyone around them does what’s right and adheres to regulations to literally keep them alive. How does recent behaviour reassure them in coming months?
Unfortunately it’s been going on too long for it to be a minority... whilst we are at our most vulnerable and at the beginning of what is a pandemic, we’ve shown our true colors.
There’s no longer a need to call on the Australian spirit because we’ve proven it’s just a ghost.
